Reflection 7th September 2014

“We’ve had enough of exhortations to be silent. Cry out with a thousand tongues. I see the world is rotten because of silence,” wrote St. Catherine of Siena.

Those powerful words from St. Catherine remind us as Christians to speak up in the face of war, homelessness, hunger, poverty, global warming, farmworkers’ rights, racial injustice, childhood abuse, and other devastating social ills. All of these things can overwhelm us to the point that we bury our heads in the sand and say I can’t do it all. It is true that we can’t do it all, but it’s not true that we can’t do something. This is the time to speak up. Don’t wait until your life settles down to use your voice, because it never will. Even retired people complain they are just too busy! When you have the opportunity to send an email or use your voice to help, do it today. Take five minutes, and break the silence. Or choose one area to learn about, and share your passion with family and friends.
