Thought for the Day : Tuesday 12 May

Thought for the Day from Angela Birkin of St Michael’s:

Readings: Numbers 11:1-13 and Luke 5:1-11

“When they brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed him.”

This was the day that Simon Peter, James and John threw it all away, or so people said.

Their families, the fishing business, their place in society and for what?

In order to follow an itinerant healer and preacher from a backwater town called Nazareth!

In order to fish for people!

What were they thinking?

Not about riches, or a comfortable and easy life, or power and influence.

Simon Peter said to Jesus, “You have the words of eternal life.” “You are the Holy One of God”. (John 6.68-69).

Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life.” (John 14.6).

This was the day that Simon Peter, James and John threw it all away, or so people said.

A prayer from the Iona Community:

Devoted as I am to the teachings of
my financial guru, my political party, my fitness trainer,
I pick and choose from your Word –
disregarding it when it makes me feel uncomfortable.
Devoted as I am to accumulating more and more stuff,
it is difficult to entrust my junk to those who would consider it treasure.
Devoted as I am to
my securities, my pension, my future,
I find it easy to pass by those for whom each day is such a struggle.
You have hallowed me with your overflowing gifts,
O God:
Help me to give myself away to your service and the service of others completely.
Amen.
