Thought for the Day by Richard Barton (All Hallows)
The Truth will set you free.
Paul is writing to Timothy in Ephesus, and tells him to stay there and urge “certain people not to teach false doctrines any longer or to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. Such things promote controversial speculations rather than advancing God’s work—which is by faith.”
Myths, endless genealogies, controversial speculations? Gosh what does that make you think of today! The fake news, celebrity gossip, internet trolling and conspiracy theories of the internet, no doubt. As the French say, plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose”! (the more it changes the more it’s the same thing for those whose French is on the rusty side!). Where is truth in the world today and how will we know it if we find it?
For me I would look to one of the most extraordinary things Jesus ever said. “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Abiding or staying with the word of God in Christ is not about constriction or suppression, it is liberating.
When you find the truth, it will contain, in some way, something of the love of God. And it will set you free.
