Good Friday

At lunchtime today a small group of us gathered in the memorial garden at All Hallows’. Because of the work on the roof, the garden has become our bin store and it is also bordered by the corrugated iron panels attached to the scaffolding - it is our own waste tip outside the walls, our own Golgotha!

Whilst needy people queued for food at Rainbow Junktion and new leaves burst into life on the garden’s plants, we had a time of listening to the Good Friday story and silent reflection.

Father, forgive us as we discard your Son
on the altars of consumerism and greed, on the rubbish tip of our lives.

As we subject Jesus to our linear economy of death and despair
you remind us of your circular economy of resurrection, new life and hope.

As we try to hide our waste and rubbish in holes in the ground,
you roll away the stone.

As we try to dispose of our waste by burning it
you send the flame of your Holy Spirit.

God of all Creation
Forgive our foolish ways.
