Volunteering at Rainbow Junktion
There are lots of opportunities to come and help us out. Here are the ways you can get involved:
Cafe
We need volunteers between 9.30am-4pm on Mondays and Thursdays for cooking, serving, cleaning and various odd jobs.
Foodshare
On Fridays we need volunteers between 10am-5pm for serving customers at the Foodshare, sorting donations, queue management and cleaning.
Bistros
We also have an occasional bistro evenings where we need people from 3pm-11pm for cooking, serving, cleaning.
Drivers
Lastly we need drivers to help us pick up surplus food from around the city on various days of the week.
For all of these roles we are particularly looking for people who can commit to a regular slot of either a half or full day. However we do also have an emergency Whatsapp group where we call out when we need people if you aren't able to commit every week.
The first step is to please fill in this short google form so we can legally (GDPR) add you to the database: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd2FycA1GzkHge4Gn-up9bbIYHDysiPyCG6AlBLVDZaxIR7mQ/viewform and then you will get the volunteer email updates that will tell you which slots are available and what help is needed.
Below is a little bit more information on the specific volunteer roles at RJ:
-
You don’t need to be an experienced chef to come and volunteer in the kitchen. You just need lots of enthusiasm and a can-do attitude! We start at 9.30am and come up with a menu together based on the ingredients available to us and assign dishes to volunteers. At 12pm food service starts and goes until 3pm when we clean down the kitchen.
-
You just need a bike, car or van and some spare time during the week to collect surplus food from various spots around the city and then bring to us.
-
Signposting volunteers help our customers with non-food related issues. It is a varied role that can be just a chat, help looking up things online or making phonecalls. Or making referrals/appointments with other organisations.
-
The queue for our Friday foodshare starts early and can get long. The queue management team are there to make sure the queuing porcess goes smoothly, to make people hot drinks and chat with them.
